Painless root canal: what actually happens

A root canal saves a tooth whose soft inside (the nerve, called the pulp) is infected or badly decayed. It sounds frightening; here is what it really is, step by step. Ask Dr. Nivedita to stop or explain at any point.

Drawing of a back tooth on an X-ray: decay has reached the soft inside of the tooth.
Step 1 of 5 Look and X-ray
  1. The doctor looks at the tooth and takes an X-ray, a picture of the inside of the tooth, to see how deep the decay goes. Sometimes a filling is enough and no root canal is needed.

  2. An injection numbs the tooth and the gum around it. After that most people feel pressure and movement, not pain. If you still feel something, say so; more numbing can be given.

  3. A small opening is made in the top of the tooth. Thin files remove the infected pulp and clean the narrow channels in the roots (the root canals).

  4. The cleaned channels are filled with a soft rubber-like material, and the opening is closed with a filling so germs can't get back in. A root canal often takes more than one sitting.

  5. The tooth may feel tender for a few days. The doctor tells you what to eat, and whether the tooth needs a cap (a crown) to protect it. You keep your own tooth.

"She has done my root canel very well with zero pain."

Every tooth is different. This is a general guide, not advice for your tooth; the doctor explains your own treatment after a look.

What Dr. Nivedita treats

In plain words. Not sure which one you need? Book a check-up; the doctor looks first and explains.

  • A dental X-ray of a full set of teeth on a clinic screen

    Root canal treatment

For a tooth that aches, wakes you at night, or keeps hurting after hot or cold. The infected inside is cleaned out and sealed, so you keep your own tooth instead of losing it.

  • A gloved hand holding small dental check-up tools

    Fillings for cavities

A cavity is a small hole made by decay. It often starts as a twinge with cold water or sweets. The decay is removed and the hole filled, so it stops hurting and stops growing.

  • A woman dentist wearing magnifying glasses working on a patient's teeth

    Teeth cleaning

Removes tartar, the hard yellow layer along the gums that a toothbrush can't shift, and polishes the teeth. Helps with bleeding gums and bad breath.

  • A dentist in blue scrubs treating a patient lying back in the chair

    Taking out a tooth

When a tooth is too broken or loose to save, or sticks out and gets in the way. The doctor first checks whether it can be saved; if not, the area is numbed before it comes out.

  • A woman with long dark hair smiling widely

    Whitening and a nicer smile

Tea, tobacco and age turn teeth yellow. A cleaning removes surface stains; whitening lightens the colour further. Ask the doctor what will work for your teeth.

  • A girl in a dental chair smiling during a check-up, with a dentist beside her

    Check-ups for the whole family

The clinic sees patients of all ages, children included. A check-up finds small problems, like a cavity in a milk tooth, before they hurt. Sunday suits school and office days off.

Questions patients ask

Which number should I call, and which is WhatsApp?

Call 90397 80037, the number on the clinic's Google page. For WhatsApp, message 89621 29759, the number on the clinic's Justdial page. If one doesn't answer, try the other.

Is the clinic really open on Sunday?

Yes. Google lists Sunday 9 am to 5 pm. On other days there are two sittings: 11 am to 1:30 pm (1 pm on Thursday) and 5 to 9 pm. Festival days may differ, so call first.

Does a root canal hurt?

The tooth is numbed first, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Four of the clinic's Google reviewers tagged it "painless process". If you're nervous, say so; you can ask the doctor to explain each step.

How much will it cost?

That depends on what your tooth needs, which the doctor can only tell after a look. Ask on a call or WhatsApp. Prices are not listed on this site.

Can I bring my child?

Yes. The clinic treats patients of all ages, children included.

How can I pay?

Cash and UPI, as listed on the clinic's Justdial page.
